Big catches – big fish at Bessy Beck.

The wet and dull weather this month has been more conducive to catching fish during the main part of the day, however, early morning and dusk have been the most productive.

Large numbers of fish have been seen taking what appeared to be small midge flies off the surface, yet they have been difficult to tempt.  Sedge flies have been hatching in the later afternoon and evening.

A size 16 Knotted Midge or Black Gnat have been best to tempt rising fish, but a Dial Bach either basic or with a red rib has been the most successful.  Small Black Buzzers CDC emergers have also been catching fish.

Neil Parkinson from Carlisle stayed late one evening to catch and return 15 fish to 6lb using emergers and Dial Bach. Bobby Bell also from Carlisle fished a number of times this month catching up to 12 fish per session, his best fish 11lb 8oz was caught on a dial bach on the 7th July.

The best fish of the month 14lb was caught on a Red Buzzer by Tony Daykin from Darlington.  Thomas Graham from Workington had a 13lb on a Black Buzzer and Mr Dale having not caught a fish all day caught a 12lb 8oz fish on his last cast using a small Hares Ear.

If the weather gets warmer which should be the case in July and August then mornings and evenings should be best and we can expect sedges coming into their own and perhaps Daddy Long Legs in august.
