Following a rather indifferent April in weather and angling results, May began much better with warmer conditions and more fly life.
In the first week of May, fish could be seen rising to midge throughout the day and anglers were able to catch fish persistently on the dry fly for the first time this year.
Fishing in the evenings had particularly good results with Jay from Ravenstonedale catching a number of fish the largest being 10lb and 13lb.
With air temperatures rising steadily, the Island Lake reached 18'C on the 14th May and the fish responded.
Anglers had better and better catches mainly on dry fly and buzzer. Richard Hold from Richmond had 15 in one session, largest 12lbs.
Sunday 18th May saw the first hatch of Hawthorn fly and the fish went mad taking anything big and black that floated. All anglers had good catches.
On 20th May Arnold Patefield who has a Tuesday season rod fished for 3hrs and caught 40+ fish, then stopped because it was too easy.
If the weather does not become too hot we can expect at least two very good months of fishing with dry fly at its best.
Anglers are reminded to book fishing as Bessy Beck is now only open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
There are still a number of season rods available for Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
