Angling Report - May 2010

Cold North and East winds have reduced fly life at the beginning of May. Fish can be found feeding on the surface but not in the numbers expected at this time of year. When there is surface activity then CDC emergers or Black Hoppers have been most successful.

8th May; Penrith angler John France who nornally fishes buzzers without exeption had to resort to a Humungus lure to achieve a very good catch of 16 fish. On the same day Tony Stock caught a personal best Rainbow of 12 lbs using a small lure.

9th May; Ernie Craster used a buzzer under an indicator to catch 29 fish to 8lb 2oz

17th May; the wind is changing to the west and the temperatures are increasing, fish can be seen rising to alders and small olive upwinged flies. No Hawthorn flies have yet been seen, but fish can be caught using black dries eg Black Hoppers.

21st May; temperatures are rising rapidly, 6 degrees centigrade in 3 days, fish are unhappy with this sudden rise and not taking so well.

25th May; cooler nights and days have reduced water temperatures and fish are again taking well. Arnold Patefield caught 15 fish to 12lbs during a short afternoon session using a black buzzer.

27th May; Paul Gasgoine had a good day catching a number of fish on Daddies the best were 5lbs and 6lb 6oz.

28th May; Geoff Gardener caught two 8lb fish using a small black buzzer.

The algae which formed during the hot period has now dispersed and weed is not a problem.
