The month started wet and windy from the west following the same pattern which began at Christmas, quite good for catching fish but bad for getting anglers to come out. There were some good catches during this period mainly to buzzers and smaller patterns. Chris Doyle from Penrith caught 21 in one visit using buzzers. Graeme Kennelly from Lancaster had a good day catching a number of fish on small spider patterns, the largest 7lb 8oz and 10lb 8oz.
The latter half of the month was dominated by very cold north and east winds. Lake temperatures plummeted from 8'C to around 3'C and this continued over the Easter period. Fish became difficult to catch and only those anglers who used sunk lines with flies fished very slowly were successful. Popular patterns were Cats Whisker and Bloodworm.
Now at the end of the month the wind has moved to the south west and things are at last getting warmer. We can expect fish to move onto more imitative flies during April and hopefully by the end of the month onto dry flies.
We have just opened a Bistro at Bessy Beck making it better for families and for groups of anglers having tuition or just fun days.
