Angling Report - October 2009

Early October

Large double figure fish still difficult to tempt yet many 6-7lb fish being caught. Most anglers are catching moderate numbers of fish i.e. up to 6 per visit but not many catching 10 or more. Most fish stocked in the Island lake are between 3 and 7lbs with some up to 15lbs.

Lake temperatures have been warmer than normal for the time of year but are now dropping. The best for fishing is from mid day to evening when most fish can be seen rising.

Daddies were doing well up to the end of September but now small Black Klinkhammers are best with Sedges still catching in the evenings. Minki's, Damsels and Dawsons Olive have been the best larger flies.

Mr Greer from Penrith had a good afternoon session catching 15 on a Black Buzzer, Arnold Patefield had 18 one afternoon on Buzzer and Sedges.

Yesterday the 6th October , Ron Baldwin caught the only double in the last two weeks on a fly he tied himself, it weighed 10lbs 8oz.

Mid to end of October

Ron Baldwin has done it again, the biggest fish of the year at 13lb 12oz. Ron is a Tuesday season ticket holder and had fished all day without a fish then almost with his last cast he caught this monster on a floating line using a No8 Woolly Bugger.

The lake temperature has now dropped to 9c and fish are now only occasionally feeding on the surface when something like a Black Klinkhammer does best, lures are generally the best bet. Dawsons Olive, Northern Spider and Cats Whisker are favourites.

Other good catches: Stuart Almond fron Silloth had 11 fish largest 12lbs 4oz on a Dawsons Olive. Howard Barlow from Manchester had 8 good fish to 11lb 14oz on a small Cats Whisker. Local angler John Doogan had 11 fish one evening again using a lure.

Large Rainbows which were difficult to catch in the summer are now taking well, many fish 5-7lbs being caught with occasional doubles.
