Fly fishing at Bessy Beck was difficult towards the end of August, there was wind and rain and the fish just did not want to know. The clearer weather and higher pressure from the first week in September has improved the catch rate greatly.
Fish can now be seen rising to small upwinged flies, Sedges and Daddies. Other successful flies have been GRHE, Pheasant Tail, Diawl Bach, Damsels and Minki. Those anglers who fish Buzzers have been successful by varying size and depth.
Howard Barlow fron Manchester found that by regularly changing flies he had good sessions of 9,10 and 12 fish on the Island Lake. Sedbrough angler Peter Metcalf used Buzzers to catch 18 fish to 6lb in one session.
Peter Thompson from Carlisle caught 10 fish to 7lb using Daddies and John Platt from Preston fished one evening to catch 12 fish on Hares Ear Nymph. Regular angler Alistair Corps-Bell caught 11 one afternoon using a Minki.
Fish have been caught freely on the catch and kill Mallard Lake. Almost all anglers have had limit bags.
With the longer cooler nights the lake temperatures are dropping and we can expect the fish to become much more active and hopefully some of the many large fish stocked recently will be caught.
