Angling Report - February 2009

February 2009

The first half of February was probably the coldest period of the winter,  with temperatures down to -12 it was very difficult to keep the lakes open for fishing.

There was always room for at least a few anglers, but those who braved the conditions had to contend with iced rod rings and at times even the line was freezing. Sinking lines and lures accounted for most fish during this period.

Around the middle of the month we had a thaw which allowed anglers to at least fish , however the fish were difficult to tempt as water temperatures were so cold. It wasn’t until the 16th when air temperatures reached double figures that the fish started to take, we had some good fishing days, overcast and sometimes  misty. Geoff Gardener was there at the right time catching 15 fish the largest 11 ½ lbs using a bloodworm. Dean Taylor had 16 the largest 8 ½ lbs using a almost totally black buzzer.

Fishing has continued to be fairly good to the end of the month. On the 21st  Graeme Bell was practicing for the Troutmasters fish off and caught 20 fish on a variety of flies.

Tebay anglers had their competition on the morning of the 22nd , 13 anglers competed catching 26 fish. The winner was Hans Smith with 8 fish and Martin Smith caught the largest fish at 9lbs.

Regional heats for the CEFF/AIRFLO competition will again be held at Bessy Beck this year, the Individual heat is on Wednesday the 8th April and the team heat on Wednesday the 15th April. Entry forms can be down loaded from the CEFF web site.

The Cumbrian Fishing Festival is taking place week commencing 16th May with events taking place throughout Cumbria at various venues. Bessy Beck will be hosting the opening event on Saturday 16th May where anglers will be able to enrol for events taking place in the following  week. At Bessy Beck there will be instructors ready to give free tuition and there will be demonstrations by well known anglers.
