Angling Report - February 2008

Mid February 2008

Tebay angler Arthur Lawton caught his best ever Rainbow trout 10lb 8oz during wet and windy conditions at the start of February. In the second week temperatures dropped to as low as -9 degrees, half of each lake became frozen over and greatly reduced the fishing effort. Had we not installed aerators in each lake there would have been no fishing at all. During this time good numbers of fish were caught, the best result coming from Ernie Craster from Stockton-on-Tees. He caught and released 23 fish, the largest two being 10lb and 10lb 12oz. Keith Brogden had a 11lb rainbow on a Cats Whisker.

Tebay Anglers held their annual winter competition on the 16th February. It was a very cold and bright day and only 13 fish were caught. Martian Smith was the winner with 5 fish. Karl Haygarth caught the largest fish, a blue trout of 10lbs on a Black Fritz.

The Troutmasters fish-off was held on the 23rd of February in very, very wet and windy conditions. Originally there were 13 entries but on the day only 9 competed. Blythe Palmer won with 9 fish, largest 11lb, mainly on a Black Zonker. David Mordue was second with 8 fish. His largest was 9lb. Peter Crowe was third with 6 fish. Paul Chator, fishing his first competition, caught his largest ever fish, a rainbow of 10lb on a Bloodworm.

CEFF/Airflow competitions will be held at Bessy Beck this year. The individual heat is on Friday the 18th April and the team heat on Friday the 25th April. Details can be found on the CEFF web site.

The very successful fly tying course run at Bessy Beck by Jeremy Lucas has now finished. Jeremy intends to run two courses this Autumn, one for beginners and one for experienced tiers. As well as tying modern successful flies participants get tips on how to fish them from Jeremy, a current England international.

At Easter a Restaurant is to be opened at Bessy Beck which will be available to anglers as well as families and visitors.

Bessy Beck is becoming very popular and particularly at this time of year booking is advisable. Call Bessy Beck on 01539 623303
