Angling Report - March 2005

Late March 2005

The Arctic conditions during the last 2 weeks of February severely restricted the fishing effort; five days were lost due to icing. For over 3 weeks we had bitterly cold Northeast winds and the lake temperature did not rise above 2c.

Quite amazingly on one of the few slightly warmer days Mr Alan Entwhistle from Fleetwood caught and returned 73 Rainbow trout to 6lbs, all were caught on a Damsel type nymph during an all day session.

Early March saw a change to very wet and windy; this in turn kept fishermen away. However these conditions were much better for catching fish and a number of anglers had good catches of up to 20 fish. Lures in general caught most of the fish with the Cat’s whisker being the most successful.

David Carne had the largest fish of the month at 11lb 8oz on a Goldhead Damsel.

The weather has now turned much warmer, on the 18th March the lake temperatures have raised to 8c. Fish can be seen moving, and it won’t be long before we get fish rising throughout the day.

Latest: 20th March, Tony Daykin has just had a beautiful over wintered rainbow of 16lbs on a red bloodworm.

Bloodworm, buzzers and dries are now the best option. Chris Wilson caught his biggest fish to date, a 4 ½ lb rainbow, again in really good condition.

The fishery is now becoming very busy particularly at weekends; anglers should book to avoid disappointment.
