Temperatures at the end of July just got hotter and hotter, air temperatures 30c and water temperatures in excess of 20c. The last hour of the day was the only time fish could be tempted, and they did switch on with double figure numbers being caught.
Water was getting very short in all lakes and our fish farm was almost at critical low levels, when at last the rain came at the beginning of Aug and prevented the situation becoming desperate. Water temperatures reduced to around 18c and fish started to take during the day.
Mike James from Lancaster had success on very hot evenings using size 18 buzzers: he had 8 fish then 10 fish in successive visits.
Frank Vaughan fishing in similar hot conditions returned 10 fish the largest estimated at 10lbs. These were again caught on very small buzzers.
In August with cooler conditions Steve Hayhurst from Morland had 16 fish on a CDC buzzer, then on another visit he had an 8lb 8oz fish on bloodworm (it was actually on the 8th day of the 8th month). Now on the 14th August lake water temperatures are down to 15c and angling has returned to normal with catches getting tack to where they should be, and with more rain forecast things can only get better.
We should have seen the end of high water temperatures as nights are getting longer and cooler. Looking forward to September and October rainbows will be at their hard fighting best and it is expected that lures, buzzers and dry flies will all bear results.
