Cooling water temperatures during the latter half of September persuaded fish to be less choosy than they had been earlier in the month, fish were being caught on lures as well as imitative dries.
The best catch of the month was by Alan Taylor from Shap who caught and released 18 fish to 8lb using a black lure. Penrith angler Chris Little fished for two days catching 14 each day, he was using a gold bodied Minki.
Marion Baldwin, Frank Vaughan and Kevin Henderson all had into the teens of fish per visit, Minki’s being the most popular lure. Arnold Patefield stuck with his normal black buzzer and had 12 fish the largest 10lbs.
The annual Bessy Beck Dry Fly competition was held on the 5th October, conditions were difficult with a very rare bright and sunny day. Penrith angler David Haywood was first with 5 fish using a No 18 CDC fly.
An exceptional catch was made on the Bait Lake by 10 year old Albert Hindson using a Rapala, the 9.25lb Rainbow was the largest fish ever caught on this lake.
A Corporate event was held for Lewis Electrical from Penrith, two anglers who had not fly fished before caught 7 fish each following a short period of tuition.
