The fishing has improved at last, it may be due to the slightly cooler water temperature, and most anglers are having reasonable catches.
Dry flies are the most successful by far, during the latter part of August black and grey midge type patterns the smaller the better, but now larger hoppers and Daddies are working well.
In the Island Lake fish are regularly being caught between 5-7lb with the occasional double. Most fish being caught in the upper 2ft of water. The Mallard Lake which can normally be relied upon to produce fish in the most hopeless of conditions is now fishing extremely well, with no one going home empty handed.
Richard Hold from Richmond had a good day on the Island Lake taking a number of fish to 6lb using a No 16 Dry. Mr Salter and Mr Pratt from Preston caught and returned fish throughout their session using small dries. Mr Gilbert from Blackpool only caught two fish during his session but they weighed 5lb and 7lb, he was using a Black Hopper.
We can now look forward to a productive period of fishing as the water cools further and the fish start taking a larger variety of flies and lures.
The Jack Charlton disabled anglers event was held at Bessy Beck on the 20th August, 55 disabled anglers took part and they caught 133 fish. A large part of these were bait anglers, however a number of wheelchair anglers fly fished on the Island lake and three fish over 6lb were caught.
Jack Charlton advised and assisted the anglers throughout the day and presented prizes at the end. The event was sponsored by Kingmoor Park properties.
